# Direct mail overview

> How to run direct mail that brings in booked jobs.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **The one thing to remember:** mailing your own existing customers and their neighbors with a relevant, well-targeted offer beats cold, bulk prospecting mail by a wide margin, every time.

## What drives results

* **Who you mail matters most.** Targeting beats design every time.
* **The offer is second.** A clear dollar amount and deadline beats clever copy.
* **Design matters third.** Simple and clear wins over polished and vague.
* **Stay targeted, not bulk.** Avoid mass-sending to multiple thousands at once, it drives up cost and lowers ROI. A focused list of a few hundred of the right people beats a blast to thousands of the wrong ones. If broad neighborhood coverage is genuinely needed, consider EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail).
* **Send more than once.** Build 3-6 mail touches into the workflow for each person, not a single card. This matters most for new prospects, automated radius triggers, and radius blasts, where one mailer rarely closes it alone.
* **Every campaign should end in one action: book an appointment.** If a piece can't be tied to a booked job, skip it.

## Pick a campaign

>
> Cross-sell promo, seasonal tune-up reminder, expiring membership renewal, win-back, one-time customer to membership, and emergency-readiness.

>
> Automated radius trigger, new mover welcome, and the general prospect mailer.

## How direct mail works in Avoca

Mail is a step in a workflow, just like a text. You can add a **Mail** step to a workflow, or start a **New Prospects (Direct Mail)** workflow to mail people who aren't customers yet.

The presets are **Four Mailers**, **Two Mailers** and **Single Mailer**. After the first piece, each next mailer goes out 10 days after the one before it is delivered. To reach 3 to 6 touches, add more **Mail** steps.

Ready to build one? See [Create a direct mail campaign](https://help.avoca.ai/outbound/direct-mail/create-campaign.md).
